This week’s Photo Friday entry: ’The Body’
I missed the last two photo friday themes because I was away in Raja Ampat (Indonesia) with no network connection. Today I wanted to include some photos from there into this post. Usually when you see Peacock Mantis Shrimp you cannot see their body, you see them sitting up out of their hole as above. This little fellow was actually scurrying across the sand from hole to hole. In the photo below you can see that his body is made of corrugated pieces like a coat of armour.
I hope you found this post interesting. Stay tuned over the next few days for more tales from Raja Ampat.
If you want to see more of my underwater photos from various places then check out the galleries in my Reef Beasties Gallery. Or my best from 2012 here.

Super cool Suzy, I was watching Professor Cox talking about how the Mantis Shrimp packs the strongest punch and super cool 3D eyes
Thanks Poul. They do have amazing eyes but I suspect the Professor was talking about the larger Tiger Mantis, they have a super fast hammer claw blow and really weird wiggly eyes! I have a photo of one of those but only him sitting in the hole. I might even have some video of his eyes but it depends how it came out, it wasnt my camera and I couldnt seem to get the hang of the video for some reason.
I’m sure you are right Suzy
I’m looking forward to the video, I have faith in you
lol. Just looking at it now… its *really bad*!!
Oh no
Can you sue the airline?
well considering my normal camera has no video at all probably not
lol might be worth a try
Its not quite as bad when the nasty cyan colour cast is removed by making it black and white. I’ll put the clip of his eyes moving in my next blog post tomorrow about the Algae Patch dive site
I enjoyed that video
Awesome shots! I’ve never got one out of it’s hole
Wow! That first picture is funny and elegant at the same time.
lol Thanks, they are funny & charming little chaps
